RE: Is this a good truck?

Thanks for the feedback, I could not post the whole report, so something got missed.
The license thing is that the aircare has expired, and needs to be tested and passed before it can be put on the road.
Not a biggy as it passed everytime and should pass fine now, but sounds like it would be no better than my current 1977 400CI truck.

Well looked after Lariat with all the right equipment and the bulletproof fuel efficient 7.3l Diesel. Call us today for all the details., Stock# A09068, $8,450.00
My concern is our air care test shows it going up to 9% then 14% on the opacity test.
What causes this and does that make it a bad deal?
AirCare inspection results for VIN 1FTHX25M2LKA09068 are shown below. According to the inspection records, this vehicle is a 1990 model year vehicle with a curb weight of 2201 kilograms and an engine displacement of 7.3 litres. Based on the results obtained, this vehicle is not currently eligible for re-licensing.

RE: diesel engine respond

All I can add to this is the fact that while on vacation three weeks ago a mechanic for a ford dealer stopped to admire my old truck, and during the short conversation on me going for an upgrade and maybe a diesel, he said "stay away from the 6.0" so have no idea why he thought that, just the fact he said they are not good.

So they turned down my last offer of 9,000, guess I will have to look elsewhere for a truck.

RE: Updated! Am I getting a good deal??

Okay, an update.
Been away fifth wheeling, before leaving dealer turned me down on my offer, and countered with 11,700CDN Before taxes, and all the other stuff, I told him 10,000 out the door, so fellow goes to manager and comes back, says no.
So I told him goodbye, went away for two weeks, truck still there, so e-mailed the sales guy I deal with, and have bought two cars off of in the last year and said okay, 9,000 have not heard back.
Truck has now sat on their ford lot for at least a month now.
Guess they don't want to get rid of it that bad.

info on what are decent fifth wheels?

Like I have mentioned I believe elsewhere, wife wants to go bigger than our current 1989 prowler 18.5 fifth wheel, she seems to want to go to 22 or 23 max, so have been perusing our local buy and sell and there seem to be quite a few out there, such as one called Thor/Tahoe, some Jayco's anyway any input on what to avoid as far as name or manufacturer?
I like ours now partly because the pin box and all steel structure are all exposed, so one can see if any problem develops, all the ones I have seen appear to be all enclosed except the pin box itself.
I have also seen Frontiers going privately for what appear to be not bad prices, I am looking mostly around 1995 or so, maybe newer, depends on price.
So hope this makes sense.
Below is one I foundhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/partsman/fifth.jpg
It is a 95 prowler 21L5B they want 7600.00

RE: What is a good truck and ratio for towing?

Good input, I run dual fuel in my truck, I have both gas and propane.
I just figured to get an idea of the minimum so I would not go too small, have been looking at dealers and found used vehicles, one a 1999 DODGE RAM 2500 TRUCK ST 4DR EXT CAB with a 5.9 gas engine and auto trans with 150404 km on it, but they do not seem to want to deal on it.
They did have a 1996 ford with the 460 engine, but appeared to have been in an accident due to the front bumper being in a bit and the box closer to the cab on one side compared to the other, but did not show any major accidents on a check on it.
But passed it up due to not knowing how or what had been damaged.
I figure it is time for a newer truck, but don't want to spend too much, as the wife wants to go a little bigger on the fifth wheel too, so have to have money for both.
P.S. meant to say a fellow at work says just going from a carb to fuel injection will make a big difference, so I gather that alone will make a newer truck a good choice and more efficient than my carb truck.
I also should have asked about a 1/2 ton, like a F-150 or GMC 1500, don't mind if it is a 4X4 but do want an extended cab and long box, like have a full size box and daughter is going to be twelve, so think extended cab will do better for the three of us.
Any down side to 1/2 tons, within say max length of 25 foot fifth wheels.
this is a sticker from current one, so I don't think present unit is that heavy, although the wife loads it up way too much.

What is a good truck and ratio for towing?

Well back from my two weeks, with my 1977 F-250 2wheel drive 400 CI, C6 transmission 3.55 gears and my 18.5 foot 1989 Prowler fifth wheel, sure slow going up a lot of steep places like parts of what we call the coquihalla, anyways sometimes I was down to 50 Kmh so I figure I better find something better, I am thinking GMC 3/4 ton, want a full size box and extended cab, what is the minimum engine to look for and rear end ratio to get, am thinking 94 up to 1999 as to years I would look for.

RE: Honda 3000 starting a 15,000 BTU AC

I have a question, I am curious how long do you run the generator for?
Like do you only run to cool down at night say, or all day?
Up here some provincial sites and maybe some private sites restrict the use of generators.
curious, as I bought a 1800w 1600 peak generator for ocassional use, but now that wife wants to buy a bigger fifth wheel, more than likely it will have A/C and I will need a bigger generator, and we generally only camp at provincial or national parks.

RE: Wheel nut torque?

Found this on the Cerka site, seems a little on the light side.
Torque Requirements
It is extremely important to apply and maintain proper wheel mounting torque on your trailer axle. Torque is a measure of the amount of tightening applied to a fastener (nut or bolt) and is expressed as length times force. For example, a force of 90 pounds applied at the end of wrench one foot long will yield 90 Ibs.-ft. of torque. Torque wrenches are the best method to assure the proper amount of torque is being applied to a fastener.
Note: Wheel nut or bolts must be applied and maintained at the proper torque levels to prevent loose wheels, broken studs, and possible dangerous separation of wheels from your axle.
Be sure to use only the fasteners matched to the cone angle of your wheel (usually 60 or 90 degrees.) The proper procedure for attaching your wheels is as follows:
Start all bolts or nuts by hand to prevent cross threading.
Tighten bolts or nuts in the following sequence.
3. The tightening of the fasteners should be done in stages. Following the recommended sequence, tighten fasteners per wheel torque chart below.
4. Wheel nuts/bolts should be torqued before first road use and after each wheel removal. Check and re torque after the first 10 miles, 25 miles, and again at 50 miles. Check periodically thereafter.
Wheel Torque Requirements
Wheel Size 1st Stage 2nd Stage 3rd Stage
12" 20 - 25 35 - 40 50 - 60
13" 20 - 25 35 - 40 50 - 60

RE: Wheel nut torque?

Well dug through the fifth wheel and there was a book from the original owner, it called for 85 - 95 Ft Lbs, so I took them up to 95 Lbs, so I should be good now.
The wheel nut is a 13/16" but I gather they go more by the size of the stud for the torque.

RE: Wheel nut torque?

Great, that is what my ford truck calls for, so sounds like I should do the trailer the same, it does have the same thread size as the truck, I just wasn't sure as the truck I figured would be under more stress, but seems like the safest way to go.
Thanks for the input.

Wheel nut torque?

Have an 1989 Prowler Lynx 18.5 foot, tandem axle, 13" tires the wheel studs are a 1/2-20", any idea what they should be torqued too?
Oh yes, standard white steel spoke rims, I think they are called.
I was thinking around 70 FT Lbs, as my truck with that thread is 90 foot pounds, but I think for a trailer that would be too much.
